Do you need one receiver for every wireless microphone you have?
It depends…
If by “receiver” you mean a physical box, then no – there are some receivers that are built to deal with two wireless mics simultaneously because the single box has two receivers in it… like the Audio Technica ATW-R1820.
Usually, it is a single receiver per mic transmitter – and each transmitter/receiver pair needs to be on its own frequency. For example, the Sennheiser wireless gear available at bhphotovideo has frequency ranges
A: 516 – 558MHz
B: 626 – 668MHz
G: 572 – 608 MHz
Within these ranges, each transmitter/receiver pair can be programmed to a specific frequency so MANY more than three wireless systems can be used simultaneously.
You don’t want the wireless equipment using the same frequencies, otherwise they interfere with each other and the audio quality is terrible.
And you want to use UHF… not FM, not 900 MHz, not 2.4 GHz, not 5.8 GHz… *maybe* VHF – but UHF is best.
