Hey Everyone,

Joe – This kind of system is done all the time but it is not cheap or easy. I hate to say it but you would be much better off just getting a seperate sound system for each room.

The problem is that you want different music in different rooms – that gets complicated if you want to do that with one system. What you need is called a multizone amp. It is an amp that has multiple inputs and outputs that can send any input to any output. The headphone jacks will be another story. Anything is possible if you have the money to spend, but like I said the easiest thing would be to set up a small system in each room with a seperate CD player, amp and speakers (shelf type stereo system?). You did say you were looking for the most cost effective solution.

Any decent AV design and install company could put in a system like this, but it will cost quite a bit. If you look in the phone book or online yellow pages under “audio video systems” or “sound systems” there will probably be a company nearby that can help.

Like the other answerer said, you will need to know if the existing ceiling speakers are normal 8 ohm speakers or 70volt commercial speakers if you plan to do this yourself.

EVID Series C8.2 8 inch Two Way Ceiling Speaker Systems $289 The Electro-Voice ® EVID C8.2 loudspeaker system is a complete two-way ceiling loudspeaker package. The package consists of a bezel assembly, grille, rear enclosure, 8-inch coax two-way loudspeaker and internal line-matching transformer. The loudspeaker features a waveguide coupled titanium coated dome tweeter. The EVID C8.2 loudspeaker utilizes a 2nd order crossover network at 2.5 kHz, with a comprehensive protection circuit to protect the network, woofer, and tweeter drivers from excessive power levels. The C8.2 utilizes a transformer that offers a selection of 1.88 (70-V only), 3.75, 7.5, 15 or 30 watts delivered to the loudspeaker system using either 70-V or 100-V lines, or 8 ohm bypass.
