Hi I was wondering if I can take my crappy 100 watt home theater system, rip out the like 6 inch sub,and connect a 15 inch one?
Will it work?
Will it sound good?
Or will my Home theater system fry?
Depends on whether the 15inch is Powered or not. A Powered Subwoofer connects into a wall outlet like any lamp or tv, etc, so It doesn’t draw power from the home theatre system, so basically, no matter how weak or powerful a home theatre system is, a Powered Subwoofer will work with it. If you have a non-powered subwoofer, they aren’t common, but if you do, then you definitely wanna make sure that 100 watt system is enough to power the sub, most likely not, on average, a 15 inch sub is gonna be like 800-2000 watts.
SO simply put, it has to be powered for it to work with your system, and most are.
Second, will it sound good? Depends, its best to keep the same brand name throughout your speakers, like all speakers being JBL, or all being Boston, etc, that way they all have a similar makeup and sound to them. That’s not to say mixing brands is bad, but you could get conflicting sound qualities, like one speaker sounds amazing, but another sounds crappy, etc.
But, going against what i just said, with Subwoofers, its not as much as an Issue, like, a JBL Subwoofer would go well with Sony Speakers, and vice versa, so the Subwoofer doesnt really have to be the same brand.
So, in the end, simply put, make sure its powered, and you might wanna go with the same brand name as the rest of your speakers, but if not, it will still work.
And for your final question, if the subwoofer is not powered, yes, your system will fry. 
— Just make sure the Subwoofer has the right connections to be connected with your system. Most likely it will have regular Speaker Wire terminals, so you could just take the cables to it. This is really the only thing besides it being powered, that you have to worry about.
