Make sure you’ve got the right connections. Not knowing exactly how you intended to hook things up, I’ll assume you’re doing it all by RF coax.
So, your dish should go into your SAT ANT input on the DirecTV box. Then the RF output goes to the RF input of your VCR, then the RF out from the VCR to the TV.
The VCR doesn’t have to be powered on for this config, but your TV needs to be set to Channel 3, and the DirecTV box needs to be set to output SAT. Some DirecTV receivers allow you to switch between SAT and over the air TV, so you might want to check that if it was accidentally switched.
