Also, what is the point of having a studio monitor when recording? Is it only for mastering purposes?

Studio monitors are highly accurate to reveal exactly what you are recording or mixing.
Hi-fi speakers are more pleasing, in general. Studio engineers don’t like the fact that they color the sound.
Studio monitors are used for tracking and mixing. For mastering it is very useful to not use the same speakers as used for mixing. Professional mastering engineers are very particular about their monitoring chain (D-A converters, amps, spreakers) and spend a great portion of their budget there.
