I have some old speakers with the red and black wires that would connect to the back of the old boom boxes. Is there something I could do or buy that would allow me to make it all one connection and plug into a newer boom box or even my computer?
Radio Shack sells a plethora of adapters. You need one with stereo rca female on one side going to 1/8 inch stereo. I wouldn’t recommend permanently attaching an 1/8 connector to your speaker wires unless you’re very proficient with a soldering iron. But, if you decide to, your connections will be as follows:
The shield from BOTH speakers will attach to the shield of the 1/8 inch.
The red center conductor connects to the tip.
The black center conductor connects to the ring.
Anything other than this will either give you only one side, or, worse, your speakers will be out of phase. (One speaker will push out while the other pulls in. Trust me, this is a bad thing.)
