I have a 7.1 system, needing four speakers at the rear. I’m unable to thread speaker wire under the carpet, and I don’t want four speaker cables running round the skirting board, nor do I want to use trunking.
Can I use Cat5 cable as it has four pairs of wires? This means I could have one cable going round my skirting board, and then just split it out to each speaker behind the sofa.
I’m not too fussed about any drop in sound quality, as my surround speakers don’t handle any bass. I’m more worried about damaging my amp!
It won’t hurt your amp as long as you hook up the wires right on each end.
It is pretty small gauge but it may just work OK. Just try to keep the length as short as possible.
Standard CAT 5 cable is 24 gauge cable. You will not need to twist multiple strands together to make this work and this will not damage your amplifier despite what anyone says.
Obviously it is not the ideal, but it will work.
