I just bought the brand new MacBook pro yesterday. I would like to somehow get old VHS tapes saved on my Mac.
I have a VCR that I use along with the Sony DVDirect to convert VHS to DVD. Will I be able to just upload the DVD onto my computer? Is there a way to bypass the Sony converter and just upload to my MacBook?

You ideally need an analogue to digital converter such as:
http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product1.en.html
or
http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcmini
Converting it to DVD renders playable but not editable on your mac.
You will then need to re-convert it to be able to use iMovie or do any editing.
