Machine will not play or record DVDs.even Philips own DVD-RW. Get error message icon “Blank”suggesting I have no disc inserted. Phoned Philips.They suggested bringing back machine. Done so. But next one has same problem.Where do I go from here ?

I agree with PoohBear. Two in a row is scary. I would try customer service again just in case another person might give you some real help. It is hard to believe two units in a row with the exact same defect.
I would also try plugging the unit in a different circuit in my house in case there is a electrical issue. Some devices insist on a good ground etc.
