I recently acquired some vintage records (mid-60’s through mid-70’s) and would like very much to buy a reasonably inexpensive turntable so that I can play them from time to time. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about modern turntables (I don’t want a $5 garage sale setup that will scratch the records).
-Which brands make decent turntables and which brands tend to be low quality?
-Is there any real difference between belt and direct drive?
-What other equipment do I need to set this up? (and where can I find it for a decent price)
I’m not interested in becoming a DJ (although any input from DJ’s on the turntable market would be appreciated), I just want a reasonably priced setup that will allow me to listen to older vinyls without ruining them. Thanks!
Your best bet is the check out craigs list for one. But before you buy… try it out and make sure the cartridge needle is in good condition.
I don’t know about where you live, but here we have several flea markets and you can probably pick one up ( and test it ) cheaper than buying a new one.
Now if you do not have a stereo to hook it to, you can buy a turntable with usb jacks that you can hook to your computer. Nice but they are pricey… $100 and more.
