How to Repair Laptop Power Adapter Cords
Laptop power supplies are subjected to large amounts of stress. It’s impressive that they last as long as they do after being wadded up in bags, tossed on floors or drug around table legs. If your laptop will not charge off of your power supply, but the power supply warms up when plugged in and the power jack in the laptop appears undamaged, the cable that connects your laptop to its power supply has probably become loose inside. Repairing this part, rather than replacing it, is tedious and time consuming, but can save you quite a bit of money.
1, Unplug your MOTOROLA GP320 Battery AC adapter from the wall and wait 12 hours. Capacitors inside laptop power supplies that can hold a charge for a long time. Remove extra cables from the adapter and set aside.
2, Check the power adapter by looking for screw-holes and running a firm fingertip over any stickers to see if they conceal screws. Most power adapters are glued together, but the occasional unscrewable model exists. If you do remove screws, but the adapter is still stuck together, there’s probably glue in there.
3, Look at the seam that splits the adapter in half. This seam is probably glued together. Before you can separate the seam, break the bond of the glue. Either take the mallet and tap along the seam to break the bond or place one-half of the adapter into the table-vice right against the seam line. As you tighten the table vice, the seam should separate. If it doesn’t, flip the adapter over and try again.
4, Separate the seam by sliding the thin blade into it along one of the long sides. Slip the small-tipped standard screwdriver in to use as a prybar. Continue around the seam, using the blade to split new SONY DSC-H10 Battery sections and the thicker screwdriver to hold them apart. Work patiently and be very careful not to force the blade or screwdriver too far in.
5, Pull the outer casing apart and set it aside. Locate the section on the internal circuit board where the cable leading to the laptop is soldered in. Tin the soldering iron tip, then heat the solder holding the wires in place and remove it using your preferred method. Once the wires are loose, examine them for any breaks or odd sections, trim and re-strip as necessary and tin the tips of the wires before re-soldering them to the board.
6, Slip the adapter back into the outer casing and plug the AC cable back into it. Without touching the adapter, plug the laptop cable back into the laptop and then plug the AC cable in to verify that the adapter works. After testing, unplug the adapter from the wall and wait another 12 hours before moving on. If the adapter does not work, check your solder joints. If the joints are good, the adapter may need replacing.
7, Press the outer casing of the adapter back together firmly. The plastic casing was probably bent during your separation, so tape may be necessary to hold the repaired SONY np-ft1 battery adapter closed. While not very aesthetically pleasing, it will be functional and cheaper than having to replace the whole unit for a loose wire.
