i have bought a portable speaker system and the output is 12 Watt.
i have no idea what that means? can someone explain how it works?
basically i am looking for speakers that i can use in my room/kitchen/house with a decent quality for the volume being quite high.

12 watts is the power output of the amplifier/speaker. This should be more than enough to satisfy your needs.
