Recently my record player has been acting weird and i cant figure out why. Every now and then when im playing a record the audio will stop playing on the left speaker or just crackle and pop a lot!! Sometimes the volume fluctuates up and down too for both speakers. I cleaned my needle, and i also cleaned where the cartridge connects to the tonearm. Both speakers are pretty much new and nothing is wrong with them. I was given this turntable by a family member so i dont know how old the needle is. Does it sound like I need to replace the needle? or any other problems that could be possible??
both the speakers work perfectly fine with the radio on, so it makes me believe that the wiring from the speakers to the amp is fine
You may need a new needle and you should replace it if you suspect there may be more than 500 hours of play on it. A worn stylus will permanently damage your vinyl. Always better safe than sorry.
But, a worn stylus would not cause the problem you’re describing. I would suspect the contacts for the removable headshell first. Remove the headshell by twisting the collar counterclockwise and clean the contacts with a shot of plastic-safe contact cleaner. Use a tool to push the spring-loaded contacts in the tonearm part of the connector in and let them spring back a few times while wet.
The next thing I would suspect is damaged or corroded headshell leads. These could be replaced with leads having gold plated connectors rather inexpensively…

Or… it could be bad connection at your RCA plugs, either due to somebody pulling them out by the wires or they’re just dirty or corroded. You could try cleaning them with contact cleaner… or wiggling the wire by the plugs to see if you hear static or your missing channel coming in and out. If so, new RCA plugs will have to be soldered on.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that many automatic turntables have a switch inside that is triggered to silence the output while the table is performing automatic functions. This switch could be dirty or slightly corroded and causing the problem. A shot of contact cleaner in that switch would probably fix it right up if that’s the problem. If it’s no longer working properly, someone who knows what they’re doing could bypass it.
