II have a Winchester Rifle marked Model 86, Is this a model 1886, or a separate model?
Hmmm…. There is a model 1886, which is a large bore lever action rifle. This was modified in the 1930s to the the model 71. They are very similar. ANd there was a Model 88, which was another lever action rifle from the mid 20th century. But I have never heard of a rifle by winchester just called an 86. Can you give us more information? What caliber is it? Is it a lever action? Any idea on the serial number? Does it have any other markings?

Ok, I have found some references to a Winchester Model 86. It appears that some of the Model 1886 rifles were marked just Model 86 from the early 1900s-1930s. This was the light weight model, some were take downs, some had pistol grip stocks, and some had partial length magazines instead of the standard full length model on the typical 1886. That may be what you have. Let us know the caliber, and if it has any of the other features I mentioned, and we may be able to nail it down a bit more.
As for the TD, I stopped stressing over those long ago. Some people will give them out at the drop of a hat for just about anything. I just write them off as idiots and move on. (;
