I’m wanting to make an old Magnavox DVD player capable of playing DL+ discs, but I don’t want to go to the expense of buying a whole new (and potentially expensive) player if I don’t have to.
I am a Regional Service Manager for Philips/Magnavox and even if you replaced the DVD drive internally, you wouldn’t change its compatibility with different disc formats. All DVD players have the POTENTIAL to play ANY format, but it is the firmware inside the player and hardware that determines weather or not it WILL play any format. At this point, with the cost of players having fallen the way it has, just pick up something like a new Magnavox MRV645 DVD RECORDER for under $150, or a good newer player that in addition to playing +disc’s will also play -discs, and Divx encoded discs, MP3 and Picture Discs, etc… for under $100.
