I have a 40″ LCD HDTV with an upconverting DVD player (all functions set to upconvert), connected by an HDMI cable. I’ve noticed that with some original DVDs, the picture is slightly blurry/fuzzy (i.e. not as clear as when played on a CRT), although DVD copies seem fine.

AS you say, DVDs are only 480i. To watch them on an HDTV, somewhere along the line, they have to be processed to match the native resolution of the TV. Some processors do better than others, and it’s sometimes dependant on what the picture is-for example, some may do better than others with motion. Also, DVDs aren’t all in the same aspect ratio. Look at the DVD box to see what the aspect ratio is. So somewhere, there is processing to asdjust the aspect ratio to fit your screen. all of this processing adds artifacts and degradation of the picture. HDMI, being digital, is the best way to transfer the signal since it won’t add any additional degradation. Component is analog and can be subject to signal degradation. You can try an experiment next time you aren’t happy with your picture. Set the DVD so it doesn’t upconvert and let your TV do the upconverting. It might do a better job. You could also try to live with a picture that doesn’t completely fill the screen to see if that makes an improvement. I’ve assumed here that you have a set which has a native resolution the same as the signal being produced by the DVD player. Obviously if the DVD player is feeding a 1080 signal to a 720 TV, then you’re upcoverting and then down converting, which is not a desireable thing to do. In the end, remember that nothing being done is adding resolution to the 480 you started with, all that’s being done is to add more pixels in such a way as to hopefully make the picture look better on the big screen.
