I had an old gold plated pen in a drawer and I’ve noticed some discoloration or staining, of a reddish tinge. I’m a little surprised as I thought gold didn’t tarnish, but I don’t know if these stains can safely be removed. Does anybody know how?
Use a jewelry cloth, jewellers rouge or silver polish to re-finish it. If you do not have either then you could use brass polish but only very lightly and do not polish too hard otherwise you will remove gold. High purity gold does not tarnish but most items that are plated have a very thin coating of a gold coloured alloy with low gold content and will discolour in certain circumstances particularly when the gold wears off
