As a joiner who has put thousands of door frames in, I can categorically state that you can. Good ‘1st Fix’ joiners can leave a square gap of 5mm to accomodate the correct size frame and no need to mess about with another unnecessary piece of timber.
The original large gaps left by ‘brickies’ were the reason why you required a ’sub’ frame to accomodate a door casing.
