I’ve been working on a do-it-yourself guitar amplifier for which I got some plans for several years ago. I know how to build the box, etc. but I can’t figure out a good way to get nice looking labels for all the controls on the faceplate, i.e. label the inputs, volume knob, EQ, power, etc.
I’ve looked at having a custom front panel made but that’s pretty expensive. I’d really like to know if anyone has any idea on how manufacturers like Fender, Marshall, etc. get their labeling on their amps, and if there’s something comparable that you could do yourself, like some sort of high quality vinyl sticker, or maybe having it screen printed/stenciled and painted, etc. Any ideas or info on how others have done this would be really helpful. Anthony, most amplifier manufacturers typically use one of three methods for front panel labeling; direct silkscreening, back-screened or hot-stamped vinyl or polycarbonate overlays, and etched aluminum. Due to the setup and initial piece part cost, none of these commercial methods would be appropriate for your one-off project. My recommendation would be to create the artwork yourself on a suitably-colored or transparent backing material, depending on how you want the finished panel to appear. Purchase transfer lettering at your local art supply source in the size and style that you want, and apply directly on your backing sheet using guide lines to keep the letters straight and correctly oriented. Using adhesive-backed clear vinyl from your hardware or art supply store, cover the finished graphics and backing sheet. Apply double-backed carpet tape or an equivalent high-tack thin adhesive to the underside of the backing sheet. Finally, trim the outside perimeter, carefully cutting the holes for the control pot shafts and indicator lights with an Xacto knife. Peel off the double-backed tape retainer, and install on your panel. The end result can be made to look very professional, and will be durable. Let me know if I can help further. Best regards, Dana
