I interviewed a WWII vet and he said he was in the hospital in April of 1945, was there for two months and then went back to fight. But, Dad and the internet say that WWII ended in April. Is Mr. Lewis’ memory faulty?
VE Day, the end of World War II in Europe, occurred on May 8, 1945.
But that was not the end of World War II. The war against Japan still went on until shortly after the nuclear bombs were dropped in August. So the vet with whom you spoke might have gone to the Pacific to fight against Japan.
Also, even though the war was officially over in Europe, there was probably still work for soldiers to do. There may have been some Nazis who still hadn’t surrendered. Or it is possible that he stayed on to wrap things up. I’m not a military man, but I imagine that there was plenty of work to do before the soldiers in Europe could fully withdraw, even if the actual fighting had ended.
Also, it’s possible the man you spoke to misremembers the exact dates.
