I have a Panasonic TC-37LZ85. From what I understand, some tvs will convert 480i to 480p automatically, so there would be no use of getting progressive scan because thats what it does. I just can’t figure out if my tv does this. Or should I just get an upconverter and get better resolution?
While HDTVs do convert input signals to their native resolution, you would be better off getting a progressive scan DVD player (all DVD players now are progressive scan by the way), since it’s best to do the conversion when the signal is still right at the source rather than after it’s traveled to the TV. Plus, it’s natively 480p on the DVD disc, so it would be pointless to convert it from 480p in the disc to 480i through the player or composite/S-video cable up to 720p on your TV.
Just make sure you use component cables for 480p.
