I have my laptop computer connected to my sherwood stereo receiver via RCA cables. I have 2 speaker towers and 2 bookshelf speakers attaches and when i turn the volume up, a considerable amount of humming/ buzzing is present. obviously its not noticeable when music is playing, but still I would like to fix the problem. I know it is not the speakers because i plugged in my headphones and the noise is still present. any ideas? possible the ground wires?
Very common problem. You need a 1:1 audio isolation transformer. Something like this:

There are cheaper versions available, but you get what you pay for.
The guy that mentioned ground loops was on the right track although I don’t know why anybody with “forty years” of experience would ever recommend defeating a ground. Pretty ghetto move in my opinion.
