I have a digital voice recorder i just bought and wanted to record in a room where a speaker is on a platform and speakers are mounted throughout flush in the ceiling pointing straight down. The ceiling is about 12 ft high and the room is a large auditorium with 110 people. Accounting for other peoples talking and the fact that we sit near the middle of the room, would it be best to point the microphone directly towards the speaker in the ceiling, or towards the person on stage, or is there enough sound waves in the room to find my device microphone pointed wherever? Also, would i need to have it set for high or low sensitivity? Anybody familiar with these Digital voice recorders? Thanks!
My model is the Sony icd px720 and i cannot find if it is a uni or omni directional mic.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to take a bit of a guess in that there are some variables that are unknown. My educated guess will be pointing the unit directly toward a ceiling speakers will provide the best recording. The variables are, How effective is the room sound system? And what type of microphone is on the recorder? Is the microphone Omni or Uni directional? Trial and error would be your best way to find our what works best. Does the recorder have a counter or clock that times the recording? If so record a few minutes using one method then note the time on the recording and make a change. Then upon playback you can evaluate the recording and actually hear the changes. As far as the high and low sensitivity, I suspect high will provide a better recording. But keel in mind high sensitivity will also pickup unwanted noise such as conversations occurring in close proximity of the recorder. Again, try both, evaluate then revise as needed.
