Philips HTS3544 Home Theater System

The speakers for surround sound should be high enough so the drivers do not send the sound directly into your ears. The proper calculation is that they should be placed at ear level while you are standing. Your best results would be from aiming them at the ceiling or toward the rear corners of the room. If you do not have rear walls on which to mount your surround speakers than place a pair of bookshelf speakers slightly behind and to the sides of your listening position. You might want to try in-ceiling speakers. The placement of your surround speakers may be ideal for your home theater but will not serve well for multichannel music. I you like both types then you will have to compromise between the two sounds.
When mounting your rear speakers to the wall attempt to mount them to the studs in the wall to keep them from falling down. If they fall they can damage themselves, the drywall, and perhaps the furniture. If you cannot find the studs, or do not have any studs, then use wall anchors to make a solid attachment to the drywall. You will find that most speaker mounts will have wall mounts with them.
The speakers that are highly recommended for movie surround use and they are called the solid/diffuse speakers. They are equipped with a switch that can diffuse the sound field in many placements. They are not however, effective in multichannel music. They are most often used in high end movie home theaters.
