My reciever is a 7.1 Sony STR-DH710. I got a pair of double cubes from ebay the AM5’s that after I won the bid i realized these fossils are from 1987!. I heard the 161’s at best buy and I really liked how they sounded. But now because of the age of the AM5’s Im afraid they are going to suck for surround sound. SO im thinking of using them as my side speakers, and 2 pairs of 161’s as my front and surround sounds. I also have a sony sub for base.

Thanks, I went with the Bose Cubes cause I have a smaller apt, and I dont want huge speakers I just want some nice small speakers where i can actually hear the sounds behind me and to my sides… Mostly I just hear loud noises but cant hear the small details.
I need to be able to hear the surround sound with out cranking the volume up and pissing off all my neighbors
How do they sound? Regardless of age they either sound great or they sound terrible. New doesn’t mean best or greatest sound quality. I would listen to what I have invested and see what it is best suited for. What I do is get a nice selection of music material and play my system over the weekend day and night. I can start to figure out what it does best and what I need to add or take away from the set. My aim is for the vast majority of my collection to sound perfect to my tastes. I have found with experience, Bose speaker positioning is key. If you don’t already you might want to study up on room dynamics and speaker placement to optimize your sound system.
Unless you cannot stand the sound, I would play with the equalizer, play with positioning the sub and speakers and listen to my collection straight over a weekend, then decide on getting another pair of speakers. I think you will enjoy your Bose set. I do.
P.S. Listen to straight sets of country, classical, jazz, R&B, heavy metal over a weekend. Your ear will inform you what’s good and what is not so good, or what is perfect. Whenever you look or listen to something critically, be optimistic and look for what is right and build on it. This gives you the best chance for what you want, to work for you. If it adds up that you are compromising away to much of what you like in your music and nothing can be added to invigorate your zeal to own it, then get rid of it and get something better for you. No matter the speaker brand they must meet the buyer’s standards, somehow. Bose has worked marvelously well for me.
