When converting with the analog method, the VHS VCR must be set to record in S.P. mode or it won’t capture anything from the Betamax VCR for some reason. The S.P. VHS recording mode probably has some digital equivalent to achieve the minimum 30 frames/sec. to have fluid-motion video.
My apologies, as I need to clarify that I intend to purchase an analog to digital converter, such as a Pinnacle Systems “Dazzle”, to ultimately get the Betamax tape onto a DVD or a CD via a computer. Thus, translating the VHS S.P. recording mode to a device’s digital capture rate is critical.
feed the betamax AV output directly into the Dazzle, do not re-record on VHS. Re-recording puts the analog signal down yet another generation which adds wiggles and reduces the alread poor resolution. what makes you think betamax AV out is somehow different than VHS AV out? it is exactly the same, forget the VHS entirely.
the sample rate is set by the Dazzle. if it is converting to DV avi files, then the datarate (not the sample rate) is 24000 kbps. All digital video regardless of compression is sampled at 4x subcarrier (14.3 mega sample per second) which equates to 720 horizontal pixels. The Dazzle is not making digitized analog video in the same way that analog audio is digitized. To carry the analogy with audio further, the output of the Dazzle would be the equivalent of an MP3 file not wave. The frame rate is set by the original analog, or 60 interlaced fields per second NTSC.
once captured you can change and modify the video file for further compression or editing.
