USB Extension: Overcoming connectivity and distance limitations imposed by USB cables
USB Extension devices allow extension of USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices beyond the 5 meter USB connection limit. With the help of these devices, the extension can range from 100 meters up to 10 km, depending upon the channel which is used for connection. Extenders can be connected using Cat5e cables, using wireless technology or over fiber. The latter uses fiber optic cables for transmission of signals whereas wireless technology works using radio transmission. Most common amongst the types of Extension devices, the Cat5 extender consists of a local transmitter and receiver unit that is connected via UTP/STP cable. The extenders working on this technology are more affordable as they do not call for more investment in existing hardware.
The USB Extender works on the plug and play principle and does not require additional setup or configuration of device drivers. This product is 100% compatible with any USB device and is compliant with the USB 1.1 specification and is also RoHS compliant. Independent of the type of operating system being used, this device works with Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS as well as Linux. It allows extension of 1 to 4 USB peripherals and is powered by the USB port of the CPU (although the four port hub has an included power adapter if necessary). This device gives users the flexibility to operate the peripheral devices in real time, giving them the feeling that the devices are locally and not remotely connected.
LEDs located on the USB Extender provide link performance status. These devices have embedded connector integrated circuits on both sides and can be used in conjunction with USB hubs and are useful in preventing loss of signals. The USB 2.0 extender units are powered by patented Extreme USB technology and provide support for any full-speed or low-speed USB devices. In addition to this they allow for greater distance over the basic extenders. For maximum USB extension, the fiber optic versions are recommended.
