I have both a Sony and Samsung HDTV that allow for USB Wifi adapter for internet connection. Do I have to buy the Sony or Samsung brand of usb WiFi adapter for my HDTV, or can I use another brand of USB WiFi adapter.

Are you sure that the USB is for wifi and not just a slave port for HDD/USB stick connetion.
If this indeed is for WIFI then you need to buy the correct adaptor from the correct brand of the TV , since the TV is limited ROM memory will have only drivers for the wifi for its own brand , and will only support wifi stick of its own brand.
Others brand wifi stick will not work for sure.
