The first thing you need to understand when soundproofing a room is the decibel level and frequency of your sound source. YouTube has numerous videos submitted by a company called Audimute that explain these key soundproofing terms. For mid to high range frequencies where absorbing sound is the goal, absorption products (like absorption sheets or sound panels) can be used to eliminate the echoes and reverberation within a room. For lower frequencies and louder noises where blocking sound is the goal, sound blocking products (like sound insulation) should be used.
The following acoustic noise reduction tips are important to keep in mind when purchasing sound control products:
o Every application is unique. Sound absorption and sound blocking products are very different but can often be used in combination to achieve the best results. It’s always best to consult with an acoustic noise reduction expert before purchasing products to discuss your situation and determine which sound control products will be most effective.
o Knowing your sound source is key. Understanding the pitch and loudness of the sound you’re looking to reduce is probably the most important step to choosing acoustic noise reduction products that will be effective in your space. Remember, absorption products absorb echoes and reverberation (mostly mid to high frequencies). Sound blocking products block the transmission of sound (mid, high, and some low range frequencies).
o Low frequencies are the most difficult to eliminate. Since low frequencies (like a tuba or an airplane outside your window) have longer wavelengths, they’re very difficult to eliminate completely. This is because their waves travel more easily through walls, floors and ceilings. Be realistic when choosing acoustic noise reduction products and always consult with a professional if you have any questions about how best to treat your space.
